Sleeping Bag Care

How to Pack & Store your Sleeping Bag

Caring for your sleeping bag properly is essential to making it last as long as possible. In this guide, we’ll show you how to pack your sleeping bag while out on an adventure and how to store it correctly once you return home. These simple steps will help maintain its loft, warmth, and durability.

How to Pack Your Sleeping Bag

The best way to pack your sleeping bag is to stuff it into its stuff sack—not roll it.

  1. Start from the bottom: Grab the bottom of the bag first so trapped air escapes from the top.
  2. Stuff in handfuls: Place the stuff sack between your feet for stability and stuff the bag in evenly, turning as you go.
  3. Secure the sack: Tighten the top cord or roll down the dry sack and secure any compression straps if your bag has them.

How to Store Your Sleeping Bag at Home

Stuff sacks or compression sack are great for carrying your sleeping bag on the tracks, but not for long-term storage. Prolonged compression can damage the insulation. Here are better options:

  • Use a breathable storage bag: Always dry and air out your sleeping bag after a trip. Avoid plastic or dry bags, as trapped moisture can cause mold.
  • Hang it up: If you have space, hanging your sleeping bag over a hanger helps maintain loft and makes it easy to grab for your next adventure.
